Here’s what I think happened on his way home. He had Sean and Kim tell his mom that something was going on with him so he knew there would be a point that he would have to admit to these things. I think because he was so close to his parents, he was ashamed to admit that he was abusing alcohol and drugs. I believe that the use of alcohol, vyvanse and lack of sleep caused serious depression. And I’m sure you’ve probably heard this before. Its my hope that i can bring more awareness to Bryce’s case and a better understanding about the timeline of Bryce’s mysterious disappearance. Leading many to wonder where exactly is Bryce, and what’s happened to him. Despite gathering a lot of attention online, no helpful leads have been uncovered in this case. Bryce is currently considered endangered and missing. On August 30th, 2013 Bryce’s 2003 Toyota Highlander was discovered crashed near Castaic Lake, Bryce has not been seen or heard from since this accident and his current wellbeing and whereabouts are unknown. Sadly, somehow things would go tragically awry for Bryce just soon after starting his sophmore year at school. Bryce was also a proud Taurus and even had a bull head tattoo on his left arm. In all of Bryce’s photos he is a seemingly happy and healthy teenager. Eventually, his parents retired and made the move out to California, Bryce followed and decided to go to college at Sierra College in Northern California (8 hours North of his parents home). For most of his life Bryce grew up in Michigan. Bryce was a very kind and very loved (Micheal Laspisa is not Bryce’s biological dad, he adopted him when he was a baby). Bryce Laspisa was born to Karen Laspisa on April 30th, 1994, he was her only child.

(a) The weak antilocalization phase coherence length (AL) and the weak localization phase coherence length (L) as functions of for weak (so 10000nm) and strong (so 300nm). Meanwhile, as the temperature decreases, the temperature dependence of phase coherence length gradually changes from l ϕ∼ T −1 to l ϕ∼ T −0.5, suggesting that the dominant mechanism of phase decoherence switches from electron–phonon scattering to electron–electron scattering. A close analysis of the WAL data shows that the number of transport channels contributing to WAL increases monotonously with decreasing temperatures, reaching N=2.8 at T=1.6 K in one of the devices, which indicates the decoupling of Dirac cones at low temperatures. Due to the polycrystalline nature and the relatively low mobility of the films, the background of conventional magnetoresistance was greatly suppressed, and clean WAL signals, which are well described by the Hikami–Larkin–Nagaoka equation, were obtained at low temperatures. In this article, we present our study on WAL in polycrystalline SnTe films deposited by magnetron sputtering. Previous works on weak antilocalization (WAL) of SnTe were mostly carried out in MBE-grown films, where the signals of WAL usually coexist with a large parabolic background of classical magnetoresistance. The electron interference can be significantly modified if spin. In the presence of strong intervalley scattering and correlations, we expect a crossover from the weak antilocalization to weak localization. We aim to outline the current challenges and suggest how future work will be geared towards developing spin qubits in 2D materials.Weak Antilocalization in Polycrystalline SnTe Films Deposited by Magnetron Sputtering Metrics - Weak antilocalization, spinorbit interaction, and phase. The weak antilocalization always dominates the magnetoconductivity near zero field, thus gives one of the transport signatures for Weyl semimetals. Information on phase-coherence can be obtained by analyzing transport phenomena such as weak (anti)localization and universal conductance fluctuations in structures of the according length scale 24. In the second part of this article, we extend our discussion to TMDs and TI nanostructures. Subsequently, a historical review of experimental development in this field is presented, from the early demonstration of graphene nanodevices on SiO2 substrate to more recent progress in utilizing hexagonal boron nitride to reduce substrate disorder. We supply the entry-level knowledge for this field by first introducing the fundamental properties of 2D bulk materials followed by the theoretical background relevant to the physics of nanostructures. But the phase coherence length can reach up to 100nm to 1 m below the liquid helium temperature. 49 However, these topological materials require clean and ordered crystal phases for time-reversal symmetry to be induced. Magnetoconductivity measurements of SnTe films reveal a coexistence of weak antilocalization, consistent with topologically non-trivial states, and weak localization, consistent with trivial states from the bulk. In this article, we review a selection of transport studies addressing the confinement and manipulation of charges in nanostructures fabricated from various 2D materials. Applying a strong perpendicular magnetic field can break this symmetry, giving rise to the well-known property of weak antilocalization (WAL). Nanostructures made of these materials are also viable for use in quantum computing applications involving the superposition and entanglement of individual charge and spin quanta. The surface states of topological insulators (TIs) exhibit a spin–momentum locking that opens up the possibility of controlling the spin degree of freedom in the absence of an external magnetic field. Graphene is a robust material for spintronics owing to its weak spin–orbit and hyperfine interactions, while monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess a Zeeman effect-like band splitting in which the spin and valley degrees of freedom are nondegenerate. Two-dimensional (2D) materials for their versatile band structures and strictly 2D nature have attracted considerable attention over the past decade. He starts with the example of K-Pop, emphasising that it has formed through the impact of African-American hip hop and J-Pop from Japan. In Chapter One, Kim broadly elaborates on the history of Korean popular culture. This conceptual framework provides readers with a method to analyse popular culture and mimicry in nations positioned between two identities. Hence, hegemonic mimicry differs from other cultural theories that explain the spread of one country’s culture, such as flows from the Global South or media imperialism. It has become hegemonic, but it is mimicry by nature. Korean popular culture is based on the Korean language and does not take its power from the diaspora or cultural proximity based on the consumption of media from or close to one’s own culture (19). Image Credit: ‘KARA 4th ALBUM SHOWCASE’ by m-louis. Korean identity finds itself defined by twoness – by hegemonic American culture and local culture (29) However, the author argues throughout the book that Koreans are redefining ‘becoming minjok’ (Korean national ethnic identity) through popular culture that mimics American culture but also competes with it globally. Kim argues that, dating back to the presence of the US army in Korea, Korean identity has been situated between white and black identities, defined by Kim as an ‘off-white/blackish’ positioning. This scenario creates a hook for the reader, much like in a fiction book, and enables readers to empathise with the position of Koreans.įor those who have recently developed an interest in Korean popular culture, the introduction gives a comprehensive overview with plenty of background information. Then, a transoceanic army of Koreans comes, and their culture and identity surpasses anything American (2). Here, Kim describes a hypothetical dystopian world in which America is in the place of Korea, war ravaged and struggling economically. The book opens with an imagined reversal of the history of the American army in Korea. In the preface, the author introduces the concept of ‘mimicking the west’ by explaining how Korea dealt with COVID-19 by creating its own pandemic control system after it redeployed Western medical technology (X). The chapters are interrelated but not sequential. The book consists of seven chapters and a lengthy introduction. In Hegemonic Mimicry, although Kim mentions such theories, he mainly explains his argument through the concept of mimicry, which South Korea also uses in other sectors to innovate, as outlined in Chapter Six, ‘Korean Meme-icry: Samsung and K-Pop’. The common theoretical approaches used in academic studies of Korean popular culture are cultural diplomacy, soft power and transnational cultural flow. Kim has approached this growing topic through previous academic books and articles, focusing particularly on Korean cinema, where he is also active professionally as a producer and scriptwriter. Some of the existing literature published on Korean popular culture has examined various dynamics in the sector, such as fandom and government subsidisation , drawing on real-life cases and examples (see, for instance, The Korean Waveedited by Yosue Kuwahara). With the recent global popularity of Korean cultural products and the growing number of fans around the world – such as the K-Pop group BTS and its followers, ‘the Army’ – academic studies of Korean popular culture have increased in number. Depicting a clash of two cultures, Kim scrutinises Korean popular culture by drawing on several examples and theoretical concepts, including from K-Pop, K-Cinema and Korean television, although K-dramas and K-games are not included in the spectrum. Amid the strain between the two, the mimicry and adaptation of American culture have enabled the creation and success of hallyu (29). As author Kyung Hyun Kim aptly presents, popular culture in South Korea is formed through two identities – hegemonic American culture and local culture. Hegemonic Mimicrydiscusses the rise of Korean popular culture, ‘ hallyu’, in global settings. Hegemonic Mimicry: Korean Popular Culture of the Twenty-First Century. This is a valuable and significant contribution to studies of Korean popular culture with an interdisciplinary approach that will appeal to scholars across different academic disciplines, writes Beyza Dogan. In Hegemonic Mimicry: Korean Popular Culture of the Twenty-First Century, Kyung Hyun Kim explores the global rise of Korean popular culture, using the concept of ‘hegemonic mimicry’ to examine how it has adapted American sensibilities and genres. When people are focusing solely on your voice, it’s important to make sure that your background noise is kept to a minimum. Sure, you may be used to the sound of the snow plows barreling down your street, but your co-workers on the conference call aren’t. Something like, “If anyone has questions, I’m happy to answer them.” 7. Be clear and concise (practice ahead of time if you’re nervous) and then confirm with the group that what you’ve said makes sense. Talk about important projects you’ve been working on, or your recent successes or accomplishments. Have notes in front of you, and clear your computer screen of any unnecessary tabs that might prevent you from navigating to the information you need to access. So prep for a conference call just as you would any other meeting. Getting called on during a meeting only to be caught unprepared is not only bad conference call etiquette, it’s a missed opportunity. And, when you’re gone, no one is asking you a question then thinking you’re having technical difficulties when you don’t answer! 6. That way, you have an opportunity to make your points and share your updates first. Just like in a face-to-face meeting, let everyone else know at the start of the meeting that you have to leave early. However, just because you can sneak out early doesn’t mean you should. The other fantastic thing about conference calls is that it’s easy to sneak out (just hit “end” and no one’s the wiser!). The fantastic thing about a conference call is that with a little bit of flexibility, you can be present for some of the meeting. Sometimes a meeting just doesn’t fit into your schedule. And, just like the video above says, allow extra time to download and install those unexpected updates! 5. There should be a way to test your video and audio before the meeting starts, so take advantage of that time and make sure you can fully connect to the meeting.Īfter the first meeting, future ones should be a snap. Just because the platform says you’re connected, doesn’t mean you are. If you’re using your computer, try to connect via a wired connection over wifi.Īnd, make sure your speakers and microphone work, too. If you’re calling in from your cell phone, make sure you’re someplace with a strong signal and no interference. No matter how you connect to the meeting, make sure you can connect. Being mindful of time is key to conference call etiquette. Otherwise, save it for an email or a smaller meeting. If you’re not sure what to keep and what to eliminate, a good rule of thumb is that you should only talk about a topic if it involves, or is important to, at least three members of your meeting. Limiting what you discuss gives everyone a chance to talk about whatever is important to them and helps caps the overall time the meeting takes. In larger meetings (say, anything over eight people), prioritize what you will and won’t talk about. This way, even though you aren’t there, you aren’t holding things up! And if you have important updates but can’t be present, communicate them to a trusted team member. A quick text or chat message should do the trick. If you know you can’t make the meeting, let someone else in attendance know. However, those few minutes can quickly add up if people aren’t careful. Sometimes conference calls are held up because everyone is waiting “a few more minutes” for more attendees to arrive. They let attendees know what to expect, estimate how long the meeting will take, and gives them the chance to prepare their talking points. A brief outline of what topics the meeting will cover is usually good enough. This sounds obvious and yet, bears repeating: if you’re the one running the meeting, set an agenda.Īgendas don’t have to be long, involved, or even particularly detailed. So, whether you use video, audio, or the old-fashioned phone call, here are etiquette tips for conference calls to ensure that you and your team are productive. But, the truth is more often than not, conference calls-no matter how you participate- are far more like that video than we might like to admit. If that makes you laugh, good, that’s the point. That’s why it’s vital that work-from-home and remote employees use proper conference call etiquette.Ĭonference call mistakes and blunders are common. But that doesn’t mean that you won’t have meetings, especially with the variety of easy-to-use technology available for web conferencing and conference calls. In other words, it makes the milk protein significantly harder to digest! Look at what happens when milk is ultra-pasteurized at high temperatures versus when it is pasteurized at low temperatures: When you rapidly heat milk, it denatures the proteins, flattening them so the enzymes can’t do what they’re supposed to do. The milk proteins are complex and three dimensional, meant to be broken down when digested by special enzymes that fit into the proteins like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. The components of raw milk are extremely fragile. But what makes UHT processing any worse than regular old pasteurization? Okay, so it tastes funny compared to raw milk. So for decades, UHT processors have known that UHT processed milks results in a “high cooked flavor,” and they’ve done all kinds of experimenting to get rid of the nasty taste and smell (even resorting to adding flavonoid compounds to the milk to try to negate the off-flavor). Most recently, epicatechin, a flavonoid compound, was added to UHT milk prior to heating, and the results revealed partial inhibition of thermally generated cooked aroma ( Colahan-Sederstrom and Peterson, 2005). direct steam injection systems, cooling rates, and long-term storage conditions have a significant impact on sensory attributes ( Browning et al., 2001). Other studies have showed that altering UHT processing parameters, such as indirect vs. Previously, Swaisgood and coworkers used immobilized sulfhydryl oxidase to reduce the thiol content of UHT-heated skim milk and described an improved flavor after enzymatic oxidation to form protein disulfide bonds ( Swaisgood et al., 1987). Several attempts to improve the quality of UHT-treated milk products proved successful to varying degrees. However, shelf-stable milk has met with limited acceptability by the consumer, especially in the United States, due in part to a high cooked flavor. Conventional pasteurization methods have long been in place and with the advent of UHT technology, the sterilization of fluid milk was achieved using higher temperature treatments for shorter periods. In turn, these processes produce extreme cooked flavors, often attributed to changes in the sulfhydryl and disulfide content of the protein fraction ( Swaisgood et al., 1987). Often, heat treatment causes milkfat globule membrane proteins and whey proteins to unfold such that buried sulfhydryl (-SH-) groups, normally masked in the native protein, are exposed to the outer surfaces ( Hoffmann and van Mill, 1997). The introduction to a 2005 study published in the Journal of Dairy Science highlighted the current problems with UHT processing from an industry point of view: Now, almost all of the organic milk and the majority of conventional milk available in U.S. They’d sell the milk in normal packaging, in the refrigerator aisle, and none of us would be the wiser. They could extend the shelf life of their product and not advertise that they were doing it. We like our milk cold, and UHT milk doesn’t need to be refrigerated. Americans distrust milk that hasn’t been refrigerated. When the world’s foremost UHT milk processor, Parmalat, first introduced UHT milk to the U.S. UHT milk has a shelf life of 6 to 9 months (until opened). government definition of an ultra-pasteurized dairy product stipulates “such product shall have been thermally processed at or above 280° F for at least 2 seconds, either before or after packaging, so as to produce a product which has an extended shelf life.” It’s why I don’t drink most store-bought organic milk. In fact, more than 80% of the organic milk sold in the U.S. The milk had been ultra-high temperature pasteurized. After all, that’s what I’d drunk for years before making the switch to raw milk from grass-fed cows. Yet I hadn’t expected to respond so negatively to the glass of Horizon organic milk my friend poured for me. |
