Ī few kilometers north of Colmar, there is Riquewihr, a most picturesque wine village, which is only rivaled by Eguisheim, another village, which is a few kilometers south of Colmar. From Freiburg, it is a 45-minute drive to Colmar, a picturesque historic town with an excellent museum. Now, you are in the area of trip #2, so you can see some things which you might have missed.Ĥ) Alsace. ![]() If the weather cooperates, drive up to the Feldberg, the highest summit in the Black Forest. Continue driving uphill to Todtnau where you find the most impressive waterfalls in the Black Forest, with another glass-blowing workshop nearby. Trudpert, another monastery, where the church is worth a quick and easy visit. From there the road through the scenic Münstertal leads to St. You drive to Staufen, a picturesque historic town with the inn where legendary Dr. This trip contains probably more attractions than you can do in one day, but this is no problem, since you can save a few of them for trip #3.ģ) South of Freiburg. You drive back to Freiburg via Schluchsee, where the church is worth a look. Just a few hundred metres from the brewery, in Dürrenbühl, there is a baroque roadside chapel. They have a little museum, a souvenir store and a very recommendable inn. There you find many attractions close by: The Hüsli, the most beautiful Black Forest farmhouse, turned into a museum. On the way back, you should head for Rothaus, which is a tiny hamlet named after the brewery there. In the modest castle of Bonndorf, there is a cute carnival museum with many masks and costumes. You can proceed to Sankt Blasien with a most impressive monastery. In Menzenschwand, there is also a deer corral and a very beautiful spa, the Radon Vital Bad with a thermal pool and saunas. There is also a hiking trail into a glacial valley with impressive moraines, a small lake and some remnants from timber and charcoal business. At the very end of the valley, there is a parking place near a small, but romantic waterfall in a narrow gorge. A scenic road leads along the northern tip of the lake over a modest pass into the scenic valley of Menzenschwand where you find the most authentic Black Forest village at all, with lots of traditional architecture. When you reach the Schluchsee lake at the small hamlet Aha, you may turn right in the direction of Menzenschwand. If you drive further up, you land in Altglasshütten, where you find an option for glass-blowing. Titisee is a nice, but touristy village on a lake with lots of souvenir stores. You drive up B31 through the Hell's Canyon (watch for the monument of a deer on a cliff which is a reminder of a deer who once jumped from one side of the canyon to the other). This is already more than enough for a daytrip.Ģ) Southeast of Freiburg. There are also modest waterfalls and a pretty museum.Ī little further northwards, in Gutach, there is the Vogstbauernhof open-air museum where many traditional farmhouses are on display. In Triberg, which would be a quite romantic village, weren't there the tour buses (not so many in November), you find huge cuckoo clock stores, complete with billboards in English, Russian, Chinese etc. Also limited opening hours! įurtwangen has the largest clock museum in the Black Forest, however, with less emphasis on the social aspect of clock-manufacturing. The main attraction here is the clock-making museum, which I consider the best of its kind, because it gives an excellent impression how clocks were manufactured in the Black Forest and how they were traded all over the world. See here: Ĭlose to Sankt Peter, you find Sankt Märgen, another monastery. There is also a grandiose library, which has, however, limited opening times. This is a monastery with a small village, which has a beautiful church, which is (almost) always open. So, consider it as a kind of construction kit.ġ) Northeast from Freiburg, you can drive through the nice Glottertal up to Sankt Peter. What you can do in one day, depends on your interests, your pace, weather, opening hours etc. I give you some geographical areas with attractions which can be combined.
